Donato Bramante (Monte Asdruvaldo-Fermignano 1444 - Roma 1514)
The painter and great architect was educated and trained at the court of the Montefeltro's Duke at Urbino. He lived and worked in Lombard land since 1477 until 1499 when the french army of king Louis XII knock down the Duke of Milan Ludovico il Moro.
In the beginning his activity started and developed in Bergamo city and then on duty of the Duke Ludovico Maria Sforza detto il Moro.In this periode it is very important to remember the "frescos" of Mayor's Palace (Bergamo) unfortunately lost except a few fragments and following the "frescos" of Panigarola's Palace in Milan with the giant figures named "Uomini d'arme e Filosofi" (Warriors and Philosophers) (now the survival fragments are preserved inside the "Pinacoteca of Brera" in Milan); the marvellous, very impressive, intense and moving paint realized by Donato Bramante entitled "Cristo alla colonna" (Christ at the pillar,"Pinacoteca of Brera" in Milan).
The first architectural project was the restoration, enlargement and renewal for the church of "Santa Maria presso San Satiro" in Milan; following the "tiburio" of "Santa Maria delle Grazie"; the Cathedral of Pavia with other architects and the cloisters beside the "Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio" in Milan ; the "Ponticella" at the "Castello Sforzesco" of Milan.
In 1499 Bramante attained Rome and we must register and recognize among his principal works, achievements and projects the "Chiostro of Santa Maria della Pace" (completed in the 1504) ; the "Tempietto in San Pietro in Montorio", authentic, genuine masterpiece, mile stone of the Renaissance italian art (commissioned by Spanish Royal Crown and realized in 1502 - 1503 about), prototype for the project of restoration and renewal of the Basilica di San Pietro. Bramante, on duty of Pope Giulio II, planed the reorganization and arrangement of Vatican's places : the "Belvedere" courtyards and terraces and the rebuilding of the ancient San Pietro, the "Basilica" of Constantin's age (the first stone positioned in 1506). The aspect of new church (Bramante's original drawing of the map = 'planimetria', is guarded inside the "Uffizi" Gallery of Florence) was documented upon the bronze medal engraved by Caradosso.
